Our achievements

Here are just a few achievements we have made in the last 50 years:

  • 1950s We funded work which led to the development of three important chemotherapy drugs: chlorambucil, melphalan and busulphan. These drugs are still used today to treat ovarian cancer, some leukaemias, myeloma and lymphoma.
  • 1960s  We first tested mammography as a way of diagnosing early breast cancer. The national breast screening programme has screened more than 14 million women and detected over 80,000 cancers, saving thousands of lives.
  • 1970s  Our scientists are among the first to show that the drug cisplatin has strong activity against cancer. Almost all men with testicular cancer now survive thanks to treatment with cisplatin in combination with other drugs.
  • 1980s Our scientists helped to develop a new drug called carboplatin, now widely used in the treatment of lung and ovarian cancer.
  • 1990s Cancer Research UK scientists showed that giving tamoxifen to all breast cancer patients who need it, no matter what their age, could save an extra 20,000 lives each year worldwide.
  • 2000s Our ‘Smokefree’ campaign helped to secure comprehensive smokefree legislation in England, which has already led to the biggest ever drop in the number of smokers.
With your help we can do even more. Support Cancer Research UK and celebrate special occasions in style – Shop to help beat cancer.
